Hotel History

Gidleigh Park has gained wide acclaim as one of the world’s most highly rated luxury country house hotels.

The Tudor-style house was originally built as a grand private residence in 1928 for Australian shipping magnate C. H. C. MacIlwraith. In 1977, the mansion was transformed into a country house hotel. Andrew and Christina Brownsword used to come here as guests so Gidleigh Park has always been a special place for them. In 2005 they purchased the property and so became its ‘custodians’.

In 2006, Gidleigh Park underwent a total refurbishment, keeping the comfort of the old house in tact and adding refreshing new elements.  The number of bedrooms was increased to 24 and includes a very spacious new suite, with sauna and steam room. The décor reflects the era when the building was built, with many features from the Arts and Craft Movement.

With its unique position, modern comforts, and luxurious renewal, everything is now in place for a new era to begin at Gidleigh Park.
