Gidleigh Park re-opens for 2007

Following a major refurbishment programme, Gidleigh Park Hotel and Restaurant reopened in December 2006.      This Tudor style property is nestled amongst 45 acres of magnificent secluded gardens  and woodland on the north bank of the Teign River in Dartmoor National Park.

New owners, Andrew and Christina Brownsword, closed this award-winning 14 bedroom  hotel and 2 Michelin starred Restaurant on the 3 rd  of January 2006 and have been  overseeing the rebuilding and restoration programme for the last year to create a  stunning 24 bedroom hotel.

Working closely with Andrew and Christina, designer Carole Roberts was responsible for  refurbishing all bedrooms, restaurants and public areas. The design influences are  reminiscent of the period in which the original property was built, which was 1928 -  during The Arts and Crafts Movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth Century.

The hotel has a country-house feel, achieved by the use of fine English fabrics and  antiques, with each public room and bedroom individually furnished and completed with  the Brownswords' personal touches. Top British designers include Pierre Frey, William  Yeoward, Zoffany and Nina Campbell. Gidleigh boasts spectacular spa suites with  double baths, sauna and steam room as well as feature fire places. The super sized  bathrooms in granite and marble feature highly at Gidleigh with exceptional roll top  baths, cascading shower heads and the most stunning views over the Dartmoor  countryside.

Gidleigh Park's General Manager, Sue Williams, quotes "It is incredibly exciting for us  with the new bedrooms and suites. The spa suites in particular are quite unique to  Gidleigh!"

The hotel's rustic location and the log fires add to its charm, warmth and authenticity. Retaining its original character, Gidleigh Park has accomplished a fine balance between  the classic and the modern, updating its facilities with the latest technology, including  WiFi, ISDN and HD flat screen TVs, all discretely installed. The hotel now offers a pantry  for guests with home-made cookies, chilled drinks and a selection of teas, coffees and  fresh fruit. Fine wine and champagnes are also available. The pantry operates as an  honesty bar and is open to guests 24 hours.

The Pavilion, a thatched 2-bedroom cottage 350 yards from the hotel, is accessible by a  small bridge crossing the river, or by car. It boasts two bedrooms, each with its own  bathroom, open plan sitting room with its own fire and small kitchen with a veranda  overlooking the hotel’s croquet lawn. A stone's throw from the Pavilion there is an 18 hole putting course, designed by Peter Alliss and, closer to the main house, is a tennis  court.

Since 1994, critically acclaimed 2 Michelin starred Head Chef, Michael Caines MBE, has  been at the helm in the kitchen at Gidleigh Park. Michael and his passionate team of  dedicated professionals create dishes with British and Mediterranean influences using  the freshest local ingredients.

Following the opening, Gidleigh Park's Head Gardener will continue to maintain the 45  acre park. Over the past few years, the gardeners have cleared areas of undergrowth  which has encouraged swathes of bluebells and wild orchids in spring, as well as  rhododendrons and azaleas. Maps guide guests around the gardens and woodland  beyond and for the more serious hikers, guided walks across the moors, through local  villages and through some of the most spectacular countryside can be arranged by the  hotel staff. Dogs are also welcome at Gidleigh Park and are well provided for, with four  newly erected heated kennels.

Andrew and Christina Brownsword are also owners of The Bath Priory Hotel, Restaurant  and Spa and Sydney House Chelsea.
