Gidleigh Park historyA new era for Gidleigh Park

Gidleigh Park has gained wide acclaim as one of the world’s most highly rated country house hotels.

The Tudor-style house was originally built as a grand private residence in 1928 for Australian shipping magnate C. H. C. MacIlwraith. In 1977, the mansion was transformed into a country house hotel. Andrew and Christina Brownsword used to come here as guests so Gidleigh Park has always been a special place for them. In 2005 they purchased the property and so became its ‘custodians’.

In 2006, Gidleigh Park underwent a substantial transformation and renewal. The number of bedrooms was increased from 14 to 24 and there are now 3 dining rooms. The décor reflects the era when the building was built, with many features from the Arts and Craft Movement.

With its unique position, modern comforts, and luxurious renewal, everything is now in place for a new era to begin at Gidleigh Park.
